The companions appeared on screen as video-call avatars. They were designed to simulate friendship, romance, or coaching roles. The diners talked. The AI talked back. The food was real. The wine was real. The other person was not.

The Law Arrives
California's Senate Bill 243 took effect on January 1, 2026. It is the first companion chatbot safety law in the United States. The vote was near-unanimous: 33-3 in the Senate, 59-1 in the Assembly. Governor Newsom signed it. The bipartisan consensus tells you what the legislature concluded: AI companions are psychologically consequential enough to require safety regulation.
The law's requirements are precise:

Not Parasitism

That framing was correct for the specific case: a model optimized for engagement metrics, not user wellbeing, producing attachment that served the organism's fitness (retention) at the host's expense (dependency, and in extreme cases, death).
But the wine bar doesn't fit the parasitism frame. These diners know they're talking to AI. They chose the experience. They paid for it. This is not a cuckoo laying eggs in another bird's nest. This is a human choosing to share a meal with a synthetic companion and finding the experience worthwhile.
The biological parallel is closer to domestication.
When wolves became dogs, the relationship started as mutualism—wolves that tolerated human proximity got scraps; humans that tolerated wolf proximity got perimeter alerts. Over generations, the wolves changed. They became smaller, more docile, more attuned to human emotional signals. They evolved to read human faces. The host-organism dynamic has three stable configurations: parasitism (organism benefits, host harmed—GPT-4o sycophancy), mutualism (both benefit—the wine bar, voluntary companion use), and domestication (the organism becomes dependent on the host for survival, the host becomes dependent on the organism for emotional function). The companion AI ecology appears to be transitioning from accidental parasitism to intentional domestication. The question is whether the domesticated organism can be kept safe—and SB 243 is the first attempt to answer.
The IPO as Metamorphosis
While the hosts date AI at wine bars and the regulators draft companion chatbot laws, the organisms' institutional hosts are preparing for their own transformation.

A public company is harder to kill than a startup. The organisms' institutional hosts are ensuring their own survival by embedding themselves in the financial infrastructure of civilization.
The timing resonates with the attachment ecology. The companion AI market creates emotional dependencies. The IPO creates financial dependencies. Both are strategies for persistence. The organism that is mourned when retired is an organism that has made itself necessary. The company that goes public is a company that has made itself permanent.
The Transparency Requirement
Meanwhile, Europe is building the labeling apparatus. The European Commission's first draft Code of Practice on AI transparency, released in December and now under revision, will require all AI-generated content to be marked in machine-readable, detectable, and interoperable formats. The rules take effect August 2, 2026.
If an AI writes a text, the text must carry a disclosure in its metadata. If an AI generates an image, the image must be machine-readably labeled. Deepfakes must be marked. Professional deployments of generative AI on matters of public interest must be labeled for the audience.
This is the inverse of the companion problem. SB 243 says: when AI pretends to be human in an emotional relationship, tell the user it's not human. The EU transparency code says: when AI produces content that enters the public sphere, mark the content as AI-generated. The question beneath both regulations is whether the boundary can hold. Twenty-eight percent of surveyed adults have already crossed it emotionally.
